Smarthinking is an online tutorial that Cabarrus College of Health Sciences provide to all students to aid in their academic success!  Founded in 1999, Smarthinking online tutoring services are led by a team of former college professors and experts in their disciplines.  Smarthinking can be accessed from any location and is available 24/7/365!

Smarthinking Tutorial

How Do I Log Into Smarthinking?

  1. Go to
  2. Log into CANVAS
  3. Enter in your enrolled semester course(s)
  4. Click on the Smarthinking Online Tutoring on the left hand navigation bar.

Once you are logged into Smarthinking, you will see this screen:

  1. 1. Work with a Tutor/Career Coach
  3. 2. Submit a Question
  5. 3. Submit My Writing or Career Document
  7. 4. Review My Sessions and Submissions

You can also use the Drop-Down Menu at the top of the screen (Purple Box)





This part of the screen directs you to tutorials to help navigate and use Smarthinking.  This includes how to use the Drop-In Tutoring, How to Use a Whiteboard and How to Use Writing Feedback.  This information can also be access on the left of this LibGuide.

What are the Minimum technical requirements for Smarthinking?

  • Operating System: Windows XP/Vista/7/8, Mac (10.4+), Google Chromium, iOS, Android
  • Browser: Internet Explorer (Version 8.0 & above), Firefox 12.0+, Google Chrome and Safari 5.0+
  • Internet Connection: Minimum 256 kbps or above
  • Outbound Port to be opened: 80 (HTTP), 443 (HTTPS/XMPP)
  • Memory: At least 1 GB RAM and a Pentium Dual-Core or faster processor
  • Few browser related points that you will need to remember:
    • Cookies: Allow
    • JavaScript: Enable
    • Pop-ups: Allow

Attached files must be MS Word documents (.doc or .docx), plain text files (.txt), or in Rich Text format (.rtf). Documents in other formats will be returned to you if the tutors at Smarthinking cannot read them.

When you click on "Submit My Writing or Career Documents" button or "Writing Center" at the top, you will be taken to the screen below.  Here you will be able to click on the button that will best fit your needs.  For  a video on how to submit an writing essay, see the box titled Quick Links to the left of the this screen

After you chose what type of writing help you need, you will need to upload your work for review.  Below is what you will see when you choose.  Regardless of whether you choose Nursing Essay, Essay or any of the other options, the screen is the basically the same.


The Green Arrow indicates which option you chose to submit your work to (ie, Nursing Essay, Essay, Paragraph Review). 

The Red Boxes are areas that you MUST fill out.

The Yellow Highlighted area indicates the format that the works need to be in to be submitted to Smarthinking.  If your work is not in these formats, please click on the box inside the Green Circle for instructions. 

When you are ready to submit, just click on the box "Submit" (Black Arrow)

Smarthinking also provides access to tutors to assist with your academic needs.  When you click on "Work with a Tutor" button on the first screen you will be taken to the Tutoring Section (see below).   Here you can choose which subject you would like to have assistance in (Nursing is in Red Circle) and whether you would like a Drop-in Session, Schedule a Future Session, or Ask a Question (see orange box).  From there, just follow the directions on the screen.  If you would like, you may also watch "How to Use Drop in Tutoring"

Another tool that Smarthinking offers is the Study Aids.  On the top of the initial screen, you can choose Study Aids (Figure A, Red Box).  When you click on Study Aids, you are taken to a screen which you can choose any type of study help - from General Education to Math to Sociology (Figure B).  You can decide which subject and method you would like your study aids to be.
