What is a Medical Assistant?

Medical Assistant is a person who works mainly in outpatient or ambulatory facilities, such as medical offices and clinics. They are responsible for a variety of clerical tasks, including insurance verification, appointment scheduling, and answering telephone calls. 

Medical Assistants also have many clinical duties that include:

• Assessing patients
• Taking medical histories,
• Assessing vital signs
• Administering medications
• Drawing blood
• Assisting physicians with care and procedures 

MISSION

The Mission of the Medical Assistant Program at Cabarrus College is to provide an atmosphere for qualified students to develop, enhance, and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and professionalism required to function as an entry-level medical assistant in the ambulatory care setting.

Program Outcomes

Students who graduate with the associate's degree in Medical Assistant will be able to:

• Apply concepts and skills needed for effective, individualized, and professional communication during the patient care experience.
• Apply knowledge of MAERB Core Curriculum by completing and passing the core competencies and AAMA certification examination.
• Demonstrate responsible and accountable professional behaviors and competencies required of the medical assistant.
• Analyze the patient experience to provide optimum patient care.
• Manage the medical record using the recommended practices and legal elements of proper documentation.
